Thomas Davis – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

Thomas Davis – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

By Erik Erlendsson

Throughout his life, Thomas Davis has been surrounded by those who possess strength and compassion.

It’s no coincidence Davis, a 12-year NFL veteran with the Carolina Panthers, now shows that with his philanthropic work.

The Thomas Davis Defending Dreams Foundation was launched by Davis as a route to help educate, empower and defend the dreams of underprivileged children, sending the message that their past does not determine their future. Davis is an example of that, using sports as a means of escaping some of the dangers of growing up in Shellman, Georgia, to achieve his dream of playing in the NFL.

The Defending Dreams Foundation helps fund an annual book bag drive in the Charlotte area, hosts an annual Thanksgiving Dinner for homeless women and children and an annual Christmas Toy Drive that distributes toys to over 600 children in Charlotte, N.C., Columbia, S.C. and Shellman, Ga., areas. Davis also hosts a free football clinic for 300-500 students ages 6-16 in Charlotte.

The Foundation also supports the Thomas Davis Youth Leadership Academy, a program that brings in 25-30 middle school students each year for meetings each week from October to March to help provide practical skills needed to become productive leaders in the community.

Davis also contributes money to fund scholarships for students in both Charlotte and Shellman.

Davis was a four-sport star (football, baseball, basketball and track) at Randolph-Clay High School in Georgia before landing at the University of Georgia where he was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs. The Panthers would select Davis with the 14th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft and he has been a stalwart in the Carolina lineup and community ever since.

A two-time Pro Bowl selection and a 2015 First Team All-Pro, Davis was also chosen as the 2014 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year winner for his excellence on the field and his community work off the field.
