Tavon Mason – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

Tavon Mason – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

By Erik Erlendsson

Tavon Mason enjoyed a brief NFL career that has led to a longevity of giving back.

After two preseason stints with the New York Jets followed by a year in the Arena Football League, Mason stepped away from the game and in to his second career, launching the Tavon Mason Loves the Kids Foundation.

Though his foundation, Mason helps kids and families through community food drives, his annual character slipper drive tour, collecting slippers for newborns to 18-year-olds and delivering them to local hospitals, a summer reading tour, a Winter drive to collect coats, books, dinner and arts and crafts for the holidays as well as a Back to School drive to provide resources for parents and children.

Mason, who also serves as a part-time assistant football coach and works for the Baltimore County public school system, is also a published author, writing “Travon Does it All’’ telling the story of a star football player who does more than perform on the field.

A former standout with the University of Virginia football team, Mason was signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent but despite playing in all eight preseason games over two seasons, never made the team out of training camp.
