Reggie Howard – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

Reggie Howard – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

By Erik Erlendsson

As a senior at the University of Memphis, Reggie Howard suffered a broken neck on the football field which required surgery the next day.

As he lay on a stretcher flying back to Memphis in pain and concerned about his future, Howard prayed and made a promise that if he made it through the surgery, he would use that second chance to serve a greater purpose. Howard came through the surgery and went to a career in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins from 2000-05, appearing in Super Bowl XXXVIII with Carolina.

While playing with the Dolphins, Howard discovered his greater calling – helping to serve others.

Howard launched United Athletes Foundation with the mission to empower athletes to impact communities through education and social development by uniting athletes throughout the world maximize their leverage for the betterment of communities.

UAF helps provide funding and fundraising to support several programs, including Financial Well-being for College Athletes, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Affordable Housing Tax Credit Fund.

Howard also helps to run the Memphis Magic AAU basketball team, providing a team for fifth- and sixth-grade students the chance to play while stressing the importance of improving their grades, attendance, conduct and community service through sports.
