Marc Leishman – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

By Erik Erlendsson

Knowing first-hand the difficulties family’s face after a loved one deals with a serious medical issue, Marc Leishman helps to alleviate some of that burden befallen on others.

In 2015, Leishman’s wife, Audrey, was suffering from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome that forced doctors to place her in a medically induced coma that resulted about a case of toxic shock syndrome that began to affect her organs. While Audrey made a full recovery, the medical bills left behind were massive.

While the life of a successful golfer enabled the couple to not feel the financial burden of paying the expenses, it led them to understand that many are affected by the inability to pay for hefty medical bills.

From that experience, the Leishman’s started the Begin Again Foundation which aims to help families in need after dealing with medical and life crises. Through the LEISHline Fund program, grants are established to support three different areas of need – those affected by ARDS, Sepsis or toxic shock syndrome, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Va. and in his native Australia where grants go to help families of children battling rare childhood cancer help pay for life’s most pressing needs.

The Begin Again Foundation also funds the Be Healthy. Period. Program that supplies feminine hygiene products for women living in homeless shelters in the Hampton Roads, Virginia, area.

A nine-year veteran on the PGA Tour, Leishman earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2008. He has two PGA titles to his credit – the 2012 Travelers Championships and 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational. Leishman’s best finish in a major came when he tied for second at the 2015 Open Championship while he was tied for fourth at the 2013 Masters Tournament.
