Julius Thomas – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

By Erik Erlendsson

Learning to read is the backbone for any education.

Julius Thomas wants to ensure kids have this skill in their playbook of life, sharing the message that “Reading Equates to Success’’.

A tight end who used to catch passes from Peyton Manning, Thomas has launched and participated in multiple book drives, reading programs and other initiatives through the support of St. Vincent’s Medical Center and Florida Blue. During the 2016 NFL season with playing in Jacksonville, Thomas helped secure 20,000 book donations, started a monthly reading initiative for 200 families while helping build two reading nooks at Episcopal Children’s Service Early Learning Centers.

Thomas also served as the keynote speak for Improve Your Tomorrow, a non-profit organization that helps serve the education needs of more than 450 young men of color at seven middle and high schools in the Sacramento, Calif., area as well as more than two dozen college students across California.

Fueled by his faith and an understanding of the importance of giving back, Thomas has learned how essential that is to those on the receiving end as well as the value gained in helping provide for others.

A four-year stand out on the Portland State basketball team, where he set school records with 121 games played and career field goal percentage (.663), Thomas took up football his junior year and was named First-Team All-Big Sky Conference. The Denver Broncos would draft Thomas in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft and two years later he was named to his first of two Pro Bowl. After four seasons with the Broncos, Thomas moved to the Jacksonville Jaguar where he played for two years before being traded to the Miami Dolphins following the 2016 season.
