John Urschel – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

By Erik Erlendsson

While football players know they need to understand their Xs and Os, John Urschel wants to make sure everybody understands how to work with numbers.

Urschel is a PhD candidate in mathematics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology while also playing professionally with the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL as an offensive lineman.

It’s the proficiency and love with numbers that Urschel has a passion for sharing. With a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in mathematics from Penn State University, Urschel spends his free time sharing his love and appreciation for math and how it affects everyday life.

Urschel often visits classrooms to speak to students around the country, engaging them in discussions about mathematics and offering opportunities for critical thinking about numbers. In a mentoring role, Urschel often provides his email address for students contact him. He also partnered with Texas Instruments to release STEM Behind Sports, a series of activities/worksheets that teachers and parents can use with middle school students.

In January, he was named to Forbes magazine’s “30 under 30’’ list of outstanding young scientists.

After his playing days are over, Urschel aspires to be a math professor.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the son of a lawyer and a surgeon, Urschel graduated from Canisius High School in Buffalo, N.Y., before attending Penn State where he played football for the Nittany Lions. While at Penn State, Urschel was awarded the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is often referred to as the “academic Heisman Trophy’’ given to the top college football player who best combines academics, community service and on-field performance.

Urschel would be selected by the Ravens in the fifth-round pick of the 2014 NFL draft where he has played for three years.
