Jeff Allen – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

Jeff Allen – Nominee for Humanitarian of the Year

By Erik Erlendsson

Every athlete needs a backup plan.

With odds stacked against a career in professional sports, ensuring knowledge and job skills are attained for life outside of the playing field has become a passion for NFL lineman Jeff Allen.

Inspired by a mentor he had in high school, Allen, along with a few former college teammates, helped form the HEROH foundation in his native Chicago. HEROH focuses on ensuring student athletes have access to not only practice facilities and training opportunities, but educational support in the form of one-on-one tutoring and preparation courses for the ACT college entrance exam as well as leadership training.

To date, HEROH has seen 16 alumni go on to receive college scholarships from Division-I football programs while student-athletes have garnered more than $4 million in college scholarship offers.

With all the potential pitfalls young athletes face in Chicago, Allen wants to help break the cycle of violence in his hometown by providing an outlet for the youth of the area to avoid those traps. With his platform as an NFL player – Allen remembers what it was like when he was young and looked up to NFL players – he knows his voice can rise above all the other noise.

While Allen serves as an active member on the board of directors of HEROH, he not only provides financial contributions to the program but volunteers his time as a mentor for kids involved in the program hoping to make an impact on their life.

A graduate of King High School in Chicago, Allen went on to a four-year career at the University of Illinois. A second-round draft pick of the Kansas City Chiefs, Allen played four years with the Chiefs before signing as a free agent with the Houston Texans, where he helps to impact the community with contributions to the Houston Food Bank.
