Bethanie Mattek-Sands – Nominated for Humanitarian of the Year

By Erik Erlendsson

Before Bethanie Mattek-Sands reached the pinnacle of her sport, the young and aspiring tennis player had the opportunity to meet and hit balls with her idol, Monica Seles.

That encounter proved a monumental moment in Mattek-Sands’ career that not only drove her to heights as a professional player, but fueled her passion to find ways to allow others to experience the same type of opportunity.

Giving to others is a trait instilled by her parents and reinforced by that meeting with Seles and led Mattek-Sands to be involved with St. Jude Children’s Hospital and is a monthly contributor to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Mattek-Sands is a five-time Grand Slam champion, winning both the Australian Open and French Open in women’s doubles and mixed doubles and the U.S. Opoen in women’s doubles. She also captured an Olympic gold medal in mixed doubles at the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On the court she is known as the “Lada Gaga’’ of tennis for her varied outfits and fashion sense displayed during matches.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands has been nominated for this year’s All Stars of Giving Sports Humanitarian of the Year Award.  She is being recognized for her outstanding achievements as a humanitarian.  The top ten finalists are determined by public voting at  You can support your favorite nominee in this campaign by favoriting, donating, tweeting and joining his/her team with a chance to be recognized as one of his/her top supporters.  Starting Friday, June 9, you can also come back daily to “Boost” your favorite daily.  Fans receive points for joining a team, donating, tweeting, boosting or responding to “ do-gooder challenges”.
